A memory from our Canadian trip, a hike to the summit of The Chief, a granite outcrop at the edge of Squamish, BC. A sign at the bottom promised that the trail was “no walk in the park” and it wasn't kidding. The 651m climb from sea level to summit started with a steep slog upwards over rocks and roots, and then continued up gulleys and steep bare rock, with fixed chains for hauling upwards hand over hand, the closest to rock climbing that I've done for very many years. A narrow ledge with no fixed chains and a drop below, was well outside of my comfort zone, and reaching the final fixed ladder to the bare rock summit was a relief. It was an exhilarating climb.
