Croft

An isolated croft in the Scottish Highlands. At least I think that it is a croft. I'm not quite sure whether "croft" refers to the "cottage", the smallholding around it, or the combination of each. Anyone enlighten me?

My understanding resulting from our genealogy research is that a croft is a small parcel of land, owned by a landlord, that the crofter works and engages in subsistence farming. The cottage is the crofters cottage.
