We went to Maligne Lake today as we were looking for wildlife and were told we might see bears or mountain goats along the route. We had a great day out but saw nothing until coming back into Jasper we saw cars abandoned all over the place, blocking the road, and people with cameras. We got our cameras out and went to join the melee. It was a herd of Elk. This bull elk and his women with yearling calves. He got a bit tetchy and at one point charged towards us. We scooted around a large vehicle. Was quite funny, like playing chase as a child! He decided he wasn't going to get me so went off to chase other photographers who legged it into the distance at a fair old rate of knots, followed by the bull elk. A few minutes later a different bull elk ran up to the grazing females and yearlings, quickly followed by the first bull elk who had successfully chased some of the photographers away!
Wow what a beauty! I love your story! I was on a coach tour going through that area and all the coaches are in radio contact. As soon as something is spotted it goes out to all the coaches who all descend on that place. Normally one poor animal with coach loads of photographers! Great capture! Fav!
About the same place years ago when we were there, we found the same melee of tourists all stopped but in this case it was bison! Some guys were even in the field close to these huge and dangerous animals!
Quite an impressive rack he has there, wouldn't like to get on the wrong end of that! You really do seem to be seeing life on the wild side, this trip.
What a fun capture -- I love the expression you've caught and the commentary made me laugh at the image of photographers being chased around. Congrats on your two top spots in TT this week -- soooo well deserved! I loved the whole series from your trip.
Fabulous - I thought for a minute he was a moose (which was on all the 'things you never see in British Colombia postcards if I remember rightly alongside "Mounties'!)
