The chapel dates back to the 13th Century and may well have been founded as early as the 6th Century by St Govan's followers.
During the 5th and 6th Centuries it was common for Celtic missionaries to travel the coasts. Tradition says that St Govan was being pursued by pirates when a cleft in the rock opened up for him to hide in. It closed around him until the enemy left, and it is here that he stayed to worship and teach until his death in 586.
It is fascinating to see this chapel that has been built into the side of the cliff.
