This blue tit was feeding in our front garden. I have been playing with setting my dslr up and using my smart phone to control the camera and take photos from a distance. (in the warmth of the house!) I think it was successful but I do worry about someone stealing my camera as it was very close to the road.
You might try some of these ideas to get a larger depth of field for these shots. It would be nice if the bird were in sharper focus, but you don't know where he is going to be in advance. Try moving the camera closer and using a shorter lens or maybe a smaller aperture. You might also try aiming your autofocus (if you are using that) to the side of the feeder that the birds prefer if there is one.
@tdaug80 thank you for your comments. I do tend to shoot with a shallow dof as I prefer to blur the background. It was very difficult to know where the birds were going to land as it varied each time. I used the large lens and got further away from the birds because my camera would have been too easy to pick up and run off with if I got closer with a smaller lens. It's all compromise and a bit of fun to see if the wireless bit of the camera worked. What I really want to do is capture the foxes in the field at the bottom of our garden but at the moment they are still coming in the dark. I will use a different lens and larger dof for that when it happens. I appreciate your comments. Thanks again.
