14/365 CW

Ran out of daylight today, so was forced to find something inside to photograph. Which of course forced me to try to figure out my new flash. Probably spent over an hour messing with it, trying to figure out how to adjust the power (output? brightness? not sure what you call it), and how to use it as a slave unit. Was not able to figure out how to get the on-board flash disabled and still use the slave. Any advice would be more than appreciated! (Canon Rebel T3i) Nonetheless, I did get this shot and thought it was decent. Used LR to change the WB to Flash, warmed it up a little, added a touch of contrast, clarity, vibrance and saturation, but only slight touches. Did NOT adjust the exposure. I think the flash was set on 1/32 power. PLEASE critique!
Great Photo Ashley

Great shot, nice lighting. I can't help too much there, I haven't delved into the world of flashes etc. Yet :)

Like how your words stand out.

To my knowledge its not possible to completely disable the onboard if using it as a master as there needs to be some flash in order to trigger the slave. Best one can do is turn it down as low as possible with flash compensation. It appears the onboard is still the key light in this image? I'm doing a bit of guessing based on what the image looks like so if I'm off base then disregard. It appears your focal point was on the word "Wish" and with an f/5 aperture the closer words are outside the depth of field. You may have wanted this effect, not sure. Otherwise, it should be possible to step down the aperture to maybe f/8 or f/11, focus on the middle word and all the words will be in focus without any change in your flash lighting. Great image!

What a beautiful ornament you chose to photograph. Am I correct in guessing it's a bird's nest? The words inscribed are all inspirational ones. Trying to figure out that flash/camera communication is a real challenge. I've spent some quality time myself doing the same thing but unfortunately am not able to give any advice for your situation.

@gerry Thank you, Gerry!

@karlow75 Kane, as winter approaches, the flash will surely become more of a fixture. You, on the other hand, get to look forward to months of gorgeous outside time. SO envious!!!!

@vstap Thank you. I was definitely trying for that.

@icamera Thank you so much for your comments! I was on shutter priority, so I'll try this again on aperature priority. Unisys watched a video this wekend on flash, and it gave an explanation of lowering the flash compensation, something I thought I'd heard abiit but couldn't figure out. Will definitely be giving that a try. Might end up posting a second try at this one.

@lyndemc Thank you Denise. Anything you learn, please share with me! Yes, it's a nest, a gift from my mother this summer.
