OMG!!!! Have been trying to find the snow geese without much luck this year. In fact, it's been a couple years since I've been able to find them in large numbers like this. Finally resorted to researching online HOW to find snow geese since they apparently do not hang out in the same place on a regular basis, and furthermore they're seriously untrusting and skittish. Armed with that info, set out yesterday to hunt them down. And guess what!!! I found them!!! Found about 3 or 4 thousand in this field here, and then found about 2 or 3 times that many a couple miles down the road on one of the Delaware beaches. People line up on the side of the road to see and photograph this sight! (Well, to hunt them also, but only in fields where that's legal.)
As the afternoon got later, decided to return to this field and see how close I could get. Jumped a ditch and found a spot to sit while I filled a card with all kinds of shots. When I realized I was getting to the end of that card, I jumped the ditch again and returned to the car for a little coffee, a fresh battery and fresh card, a little chapstick, and some heat. When I was ready to return to the field, I noticed there were more in a different spot, so drove down a little to get closer. As I opened the door to get out, they decided I was entirely too close, and they SHOT up out of that field in a flash! ALL of them! Every last one of them!
The ULTIMATE sin!!!! You want to talk about getting some eat s*!^ and die looks! I will be talked about for years in the most derogatory of terms! I cannot believe I cleared that entire field!!! Yes, my name is going down in history as MUD! (But what awesome shots I got in the ensuing madness!)
Its quite frightening to see so many geese at one time - were there lots of people trying to photograph them on the field then you went too close? They were going to fly away anyway!
What an amazing shot and a lovely story too. Looks like a scene from an Alfred Hitchcock movie, ha ha.
Have checked out your previous photos, but can't reply to them all at the moment. Hope you had a lovely Christmas.
ROFL - I was already laughing from @taffy with her toy problem and next comes this I may have to get up and go to another room for a moment (old lady response). You have a really lovely capture.
Wow! That's amazing and I'm saying you did everyone a favour because look at the awesome photo they would have gotten! Fabulous shot and lucky you could click away quickly.
This is wonderful Ashley and I agree with Sheralee I bet when they get home they will realise that you did them a big favour and saved them waiting around for ages in the cold! (or were they waiting for the perfect sunset shot??? ;))
@paulaw Could have been that sunset shot, Paula! I was waiting on it too! It was only about 30-45 minutes away, and that field was in prime position for it! UGH!!!!!
@joansmor Thanks for tagging me as your narrative, Ashely, is hysterical!! It is an awesome shot (fav, including for the narrative). At least my rampage (inadvertent) against the poor toys happened within the confines of our condo! The birding community is not known for their forgiveness for things like this. Hope you were able to hide your face!!
Best title ever for an absolutely fantastic image. Good for you I say! All those other people should be thanking you for creating an amazing moment for them to get a wonderful image. That's what I say...
I enjoy this great shot, but really enjoy your research and narrative. A once in a lifetime opportunity... you cleared the field! :) Only the Army can say that. Really enjoyed viewing this, thank you.
@rosiekerr You're funny Rosie! Actually, since I was in a national wildlife refuge, if I had done that intentionally, I could have gotten in trouble! It's actually illegal!
Have checked out your previous photos, but can't reply to them all at the moment. Hope you had a lovely Christmas.
