This one was tough. While I was photographing the egret this evening (Sunday), I heard some serious commotion behind me. I could see 3 birds in a tangle of some sort, and tho I thought I knew what was going on, I couldn't tell for sure. I snapped the photos anyway, the whole while wondering at the fact that I was possibly capturing the death of a baby bird on film. My heart was in my throat. And when I got home and put it up on the big screen, sure enough, it was indeed an eagle trying to get at some babies. I've cropped this as close as I can and done my best to lighten and sharpen it. Still not completely clear, but it's the best I've got. You can see one of the parents just outside and to the bottom of the nest, and the other parent is in the nest in front of the eagle trying to run him off. I don't know if the eagle took anything or not, but moments later he was gone and the parents were sitting quietly in the tree - one in the nest and one on a branch.
Not sure how I feel about having taken this series of shots, but here's the one that was the most clear.
You were on the recorder. We heard a cacophony of noise last night and went out side. The crackles were in an uproar and we thought a hawk was at the babies but we couldn't see. If we had we would have grabbed our cameras.
