American Avocets! by shesnapped

American Avocets!

Went looking for the snow geese today but didn't find them. But DID find these American Avocets! We apparently don't get these much around here, but sure enough, that strange bird I noticed was here today! I recognized that what I was seeing was not something I normally saw. It's so much fun to watch them and pick up on their eccentricities like swishing their upturned beaks through the water side to side, moving forward on their little bird legs through the water as a whole group. When they go in for a landing on the water, they come zipping through the air, no slowing down, till you think they're going to crash; then at the last minute they stop flapping and hold their wings out, body tilting sideways, and their wings seeming to act like a parachute to let them down gently rather than crashing full speed.

Normally, my BIF shots are the worst shots of the day, but today, they're the only ones that came out half way decently. Not sure what I did, but quite disappointing to have missed the hundreds of shots I took. All of my shots reminded me of how my old lens used to take them, so my best guess is that my IS was on the wrong setting. (My old lens was a kit lens and didn't have IS. The IS made all the difference in the world!) I might just need to go back tomorrow and try again before these guys leave!

@rfilip Filip, yes, and thank you. My twin grandchildren celebrated their 1st birthday yesterday. They live 8 hours away. So my week has been spent working late in preparation for taking a few days off to travel. I will indeed take you up on your challenge, just not in the timeframe allotted.
