Silage time by shirleybankfarm

Silage time

We actually got our silage in yesterday but I didn't have time to make the collage nor could I get the picture of putting the straw bales up until today. The top left picture is of rowing the grass into row for the chopper. Top right is taken from the tractor that is doing the chopping. Middle left chopping the grass into the trailer, middle right leading the grass home. Bottom left buck raking the grass into the pit and bottom right sending the straw bales up the elevator that are used to weight the sheet down that is put over the grass to pickle it.
Wonderful collage of your silaging this year and story of the day(s). Farmers work so hard and this really shows it. Fab pics. Fav.

I LOVE farm equipment and buildings!! I always wanted to live on a farm but couldn't find anyone that also wanted to! LOL My Uncle had a farm and we would go a couple times a year to visit him, some 300 miles away. They were my favorite memories of growing up!! I know how hard the work is and what it takes to keep a farm going and I have nothing but the most respect for any and all farmers!! Love this collage!! FAV!

Wow - each one of these are neat stand-alone shots - that's quite some steps to harvest that grass. Really interesting story behind the work.

How times have changed Shirley.Dad used to start the stack in a sloping paddock and which ever one of us boys was on the tractor with the buck rake on the rear of the tractor,so we would do all pick up in reverse and drop it on the stack where Dad would pitchfork it into position. We would roll the wedge shaped stack regularly with the tractor to compress the grass to promote the cooking process.Brother and i used to cut it with an axe when it was time to feed it out and a heavy job that was !!!

@flowerfairyann @gijsje @tunia @dizzyd @cashew @dawnbez @memoriesbydawn @katrinastabback @sailingmusic @milaniet @leestevo @bkbinthecity Thanks everybody for your interest and comments on my collage of silage time. Yes it is a hard work day, my task is to keep all the men fed. It is also a relief for my husband when we get the grass in without bad weather and hopefully it should turn out good quality. @hermann @bruni Pickling was maybe not the best choice of words, my husband said fermenting would have been better. Basically as Peter says the grass heats up and 'cooks' under the plastic sheet which is put on top of it, causing the grass to 'cure'. @peterlgrave When I read you comment to my husband he said he could remember when he was a boy his Granda used to make a heap of silage just the same in a field. In those days it of course it was not 'chopped' like it is today. We still roll the grass in the pit to make it solid and some people still do have rear mounted buck rakes.
