This is a huge circular slab of sandstone that was placed in the village to mark the Millennium. It was found and given by Cumbria Stone Quarries Ltd. which had its work premises in the village then. The site of the works has since been sold and now has houses on it.
The plaque in front of the stone reads ' The stone was extracted from our quarry at Plumpton, near Lazonby in 1996. It is the remnant of a wind sculpted pillar of sandstone around 250 million years ago and is exactly as it came out of the ground. As a mark for the Millennum it perhaps puts time in perspective. Cumbria Stone Quarries Ltd. May 2000'. The building peeping in the background is the village church.
