It's that time of year again when the grass is cut and brought into the pit ready for winter feeding. Here you can see one of the trailers tipping the grass in the yard. In the second picture the tractor is picking the grass up to put it into the silage pit where a sheet will be put over it to seal it. It will then natural heat and ferment which preserves the grass for winter feed.
@snowy It sure has Dianna, we should have been on two weeks ago but the weather was very catchy and we didn't get on. Now we had more grass than we could get into the pit because it had grown such a lot in the two weeks. The remaining grass will now have to be baled and wrapped.
Brings back memories.Do you roll the silage with the tractor Shirley ?
It used to be a wedge shaped stack on a sloping paddock,Dad would build the stack with pitch fork as each load of grass was brought in and as the stack was built it was rolled with the tractor to compress the grass. My job as a teenager was to cut it with an axe and feed it out in the winter. They later used chain saws to cut it from the stack but we never had one.I always remember it as heavy & smelly but the cows loved it !!
@peterlgrave No Peter I do not do the rolling. My job is to feed the men so I haven't time to help outside. Everything is done with the tractors now including the cutting out and feeding. It still is heavy smelly stuff :)
