Runswick Bay by shirleybankfarm

Runswick Bay

This is a lovely picturesque little village on the Yorkshire coast. We spent a lovely couple of hours wandering along the beach fossil hunting, and playing ball with Baxter, our daughters dog. The beach is littered with many different types and colours of stone stone as well as fossils. If you are very lucky, which we weren't, you might find a piece of Whitby Jet.
Apparently int he 1600's the whole village slid into the sea. One of the villagers noticed the steps of his house slipping away from under his feet. He gave the alarm and most of the village fled to safety. By morning only one house was left standing. The village was rebuilt further around the shore. A sea wall has been built but there is still concern about landslips and the safety of some of the houses.
I am sorry for not commenting as often as I did on you beautiful pictures but am finding it very time consuming. I continue to look at most of them and am loving what I learn from them.
Looks like a lovely spot and a good low tide.

Such a beautiful village! I love it there but haven't managed to get back there for a few years. I am up in Yorkshire again for Christmas so might get the chance to "do" the coast. Fav for your lovely scene!

How scary to see your house slipping towards the sea! Love the red roofs against the trees.
