This is another shot from our visit to the Lakeland motor museum the other day. This is the Donald Campbell's exhibition. His name is very well known in and around the Lake district because of his attempts on the world water speed record were held on Coniston water in the Lake District. I don't know if Donald Campbell's name is known in the US but his story is partly linked with the US in his wish to keep the world water speed record which the Americans kept challenging. It was whilst attempting this record that Donald Campbell came to an untimely death when on 4th January 1967 his boat Bluebird crashed on Coniston lake in the lake district. Donald Campbell, broke eight world speed records in the 1950s and 60s. He remains the only person to set both the land and water speed records in the same year, although the water speed record has now passed to an Australian. The daredevil achieved that feat in 1964.
Donald remained at the bottom of lake Coniston with his boat Bluebird until 2001 when it was discovered by divers. Both were recovered from the lake bottom and Donald is now buried in Coniston and the original boat has been restored and is in a museum in Coniston.
The picture above shows one of his cars in the foreground, a replica of the boat Bluebird in the centre and right at the back behind the men is one of his Father, Sir Malcolm Campbell's cars in which he once set the land speed record.
For those of you interested in cars and speed records there is a lot of information about Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell on internet.
@pyrrhula@hermann@maggiemae@onewing@tonydebont@bkbinthecity Thank you all for your kind comments. I found this museum very interesting, although I am not into cars etc. I would recommend it to any one who was in the area especially those who are keep on transport.
