Had a play and tried cutting out both trees and then only one. Still don't really know if I like the result. I think maybe it is because I know what the view looks like in real life and although they say the camera never lies I don't think it tells the whole truth. I don't normally alter my pictures but i have also altered the lighting on this one. Here is the link to the original.

Don't know about the crop but like the right because of the lighting.

yep I'd go for then on the right too. I think the crop on the left seems to unbalance the shot.

Thank you for taking the time to give your very constructive comments. After my play I liked the one on the right best but still not too happy about the shot. Annni, I could not go back and have another try like you suggested on the original shot because the snow had gone the next day. Still that is what photography is all about - trial and error
