These two friendly policia were sitting on an outdoor bench, taking a water break from the heat when I asked them if I could take their portrait. They immediately stood up and put a bit more distance between them for the photograph. I suppose it is more "manly" that way!
There were a lot of policia in downtown Tulum. Since I have never seen anything remotely approaching criminal behavior in this part of Mexico, my personal feeling is their presence alone is a deterrent to any petty (or other) crime.
There is a mistaken impression in the United States that all of Mexico is dangerous. While there is some terrible drug-related violence in some of the border towns, the Riviera Maya section of Mexico is far safer than most places in the Unites States. In my three visits to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, I have never felt unsafe for one moment.
Maybe their friendlier because they don't have to wear the stupid hats and heavy uniforms buttoned up to their chins like the officers have to wear in the states. I agree with your safety comments. Have been to Cozumel a number of times and have NEVER felt unsafe. Nice capture
@simon0128 Thanks, Simon! @jcarrollphoto Thanks, Jim - there is no way the policia could wear those NYC uniforms - the unbearable combination of tropical heat and intense humidity would make them collapse dressed like that! @gerry Thank you, Gerry! @myautofocuslife Thank you, Livia!
A handsome pair of law enforcement officers! I am glad to know there are safe places in Mexico; yes, the impression we get is otherwise because the news always concentrates on the bad things that happen.
