After checking out the Empire State Building, I strolled up Fifth Avenue until I arrived at 42nd Street and the main branch of the NYC Public Library. I was greeted by Patience and Fortitude, the iconic pair of marble lions that stand proudly before this majestic Beaux-Arts building. The lions are 101 years old and proudly guard the north and south sides of the library's steps.
I also noticed that Fifth Avenue was closed north of 42nd Street - and there were lots of police cars and firetrucks. Had I arrived at a major crime scene? An international incident? Couldn't figure out what was happening, so I decided to head west on 42nd and perhaps I could make it to Times Square and still be on time for lunch with my son. Much more to come in the next nine days...including the mystery of why Fifth Avenue was shut down.

Health update: I keep getting better, still not 100% but I was able to eat toast and eggs yesterday, so progress is being made. Still bummed out about missing the holiday, but the doc told me going to Mexico with stomach flu is either stupid or suicidal, and I know I made the right decision. Veronica is very disappointed for missing the trip but I would not have been fun company.
Great shot Danny, I see that you are getting close to West 50th and 6th!! This series is like an advent calendar for me, as i wait for Radio City to behind one of the daily doors. I am guessing i have to wait until Times Square and The Rockefeller Centre have made an appearance? Fabulous series again.
@seanoneill Sean, I've been thinking of you and Radio City Music Hall! I am sorry for all the suspense and making you wait. However, I am trying really hard to show this NYC series in the proper chronological order and Radio City is pretty close to the end. I'd be delighted to email them to you if you are tired of waiting!
@soboy5 Not at all Danny, I am very happy to wait. I have been following your route wondering where you will go next and trying to second guess you. Keep going....You will just see me smile from several thousand miles away as soon as I see the one I've been waiting for.
@seanoneill I just hope it is not a let down, as I noticed a couple of days ago that others have found much better angles than I did to capture that iconic sign. I was in a bit of a hurry by the time I made it to Radio City, but my shot contains a little surprise the others don't. Just to let you know, I didn't make it there until after lunch.
@soboy5 Aha, I am intrigued. Funny the things that stick in our minds, I remember buying a fantastic Chilli Dog on the opposite corner on the coldest day when I was there for new year in 95/96. Rest assured, I will not be disappointed!
Ah, poor Danny. . .I missed that you had been sick PLUS missing out on a trip. However, if your stomach flu is anything like my stomach flu, you were ONE smart fellow. My husband keeps teasing me as I am still eating "mostly white food"!
Glad you feeling a bit better!
