I did my version of the picture on page 53 of The Complete Guide To Black & White Digital Photography with this low key shot of my little Buddha statue. I used a black t-shirt for a backdrop. For the lighting, I had a lamp to the right, a light above and behind me, and a window and lamp to the left-behind. None of that was planned, that's just the lighting scheme in my kitchen. If I was thinking of it, I would have tried having some lighting behind the statue somewhere. I also tried some high key shots with a white t-shirt, but I didn't like the effect on this particular statue. It's too shiny for that I think.
