So I made the short trip to Dana Point to capture what I thought might be some interesting sunset shots when much to my surprise and delight this ship pulled out of the marina and headed out to sea. This was actually taken last Friday, but of course it got preempted by Flamingo Friday. If you look closely you can see the on board help up in the rigging. There wasn't a tremendous amount of wind, so I'm assuming they had to unfurl the topsails to grab a little more windpower. Also, I thought I'd try a few shots to meet the monthly challenge, Rule of Thirds.
We have been away for a few days so I can't comment on all the photos I have missed, but I have checked them out. Will catch up soon, but I had to stop by and fav this one. Off to bed now as I am so tired.
@redy4et Thanks Elizabeth - just down the coast a bit from you. You need to run down to Dana Point, I think this and its sister ship are berthing down here for a few months (in search of warmth)
@pcoulson Thanks Peter. As I said to Pam, it was a fortunate conversion of factors. I do have to admit that I did a five-stop bracket due to the light. Good thing I did!
@lyndemc Thanks Denise. Yep, I did apply a little HDR processing in order to bring out some of the contrast and detail in the ship itself. Very perceptive. And it was more than just a little luck to catch that perspective. I was literally running along the water's edge trying to catch the right angle. I probably knocked over 20 people and their dogs, all sitting there capturing the shot with their cell phones....who were getting what I imagined were better shots than mine. But they didn't have the HDR capabilities that I do!
@louannwarren Ha ha, that's quite the compliment! But I have to admit that after 40 years of constant travel, I have no desire to be associated with such endeavors. I have given some consideration, though, to sending this shot to the operators of the ship.
Add another fav from me! What a beauty! And today, we visited a lake with nothing but flamingos everywhere!! I'm planning for next Friday's post if I have Internet. If not, sometime...
@taffy Wow, I had no idea! Took me a while to find it, and I see my image is right next to yours! What an honor!! And it's even more meaningful personally as it's one of your great Flamingo Friday offerings. Best of luck!
I just saw this and what a delight for this old sailor. I once lived in Dana Point and you were right about the sunsets there. Your colors and reflections are just fabulous! I am going to follow you to see more of your photos!

Thanks for the comment shared on my elk picture. Nice rack alright. Estes Park, yes. Hoping for many more opportunities in the next two days.
