First Flight Jitters by stray_shooter

First Flight Jitters

While I played host to hummingbird babies in the back yard, a mama morning dove took up residence on the front porch. The baby is growing up quickly and recently I caught him contemplating his first flight. He sat there like this for at least two days without departing. Mama came back for some "encouragement" a little after this - photos to be shared soon.
Wow - -this is tack sharp. She almost looks like she's about to carry it off.

Beautiful shot of this little dove! You’re so lucky to have the nest right there. I had a dove build her nest in my yard, sit on it for about a week and then sadly, she abandoned it. I look forward to your next photos.

I don’t blame him, it’s a rough world out here. I wouldn’t leave home either.

@taffy Thanks Taffy. To be honest I'm a bit surprised at how crisp it came out, as it was a bit dark, and I was playing with the ISO setting. It was a challenge to get a decent shutter speed, and I could only manage 1/40 sec. I'm shocked that I was able to hold that still, especially since I had that monster 70 - 200, 30 lb lens on the body and no tripod. Got lucky.

@joysfocus Thanks Joy - high praise!

@redy4et Thanks Elizabeth. I've also had doves abandon their nest - and I've had them accidentally destroy the nest. I don't think they're real high on the bird intelligence scale.

@pcoulson Thanks Peter. I wish I could have witnessed the first flight. Been lucky enough to view that a few times with the hummingbirds, but not the doves. Should be able to hear it though!

@lyndemc Thanks Denise - see my reply to Taffy if interested - it never should have come out as crisp as it did. I'll probably never manage to pull that off again!

@stray_shooter Wow! Extra congrats are due for the focus, considering how you went about getting this. Don't ya love it when that happens tho. I sure do.
