toronto is a melting pot of different cultures from all over the world. danforth avenue, the street where i live, once a "main artery" travel and traffic-wise, was for many years known as greek town. in the last fifteen years or so, there has been a proliferation of different businesses from different ethnic groups. there are still a lot of greek restaurants and other businesses, but eastward, ethiopian, arabian, moroccan, indian, thai, japanese and other ethnic restaurants and dry-goods stores have been established. south of the danforth, we have a section called 'little india' and a second chinatown. west of downtown toronto, there is the biggest chinatown perhaps in canada (i'm not sure if vancouver's chinatown is bigger). farther west, there's a large contingent of jewish businesses and residences and even farther west little italy and little portugal continue to thrive. farther north, uptown, little korea is making a headway.
that is why, everywhere you go around toronto, you will find a number of signs in these ethnic languages. the above collage is not representative of those cultures as i have taken only a few establishments' signs around my neighbourhood. i am pretty confident that all those signs say something good :-)
