seeing red

The red ribbon is a symbol for drunk driving prevention, drug prevention, and for the fight against AIDS. The Red Ribbon Foundation and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) are examples of organizations that utilize the red ribbon symbol. MADD is an organization founded in 1980 whose mission is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. The Red Ribbon Foundation is an organization founded in 1993 whose main purpose is the education about prevention of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome Related Complex, ARC and AIDS. - wikipedia

the 'red ribbon project' which was created by "visual AIDS" artists caucus aims to "keep the image copyright free, so that no individual or organization would profit from the use of the red ribbon, and for the Red Ribbon to be used as a consciousness raising symbol, not as a commercial or trademark tool".

@claireuk - thank you, claire. i know of someone at the office whose brother and friend both died as victims of a drunk driver - young lives cut off due to someone else's stupid decisions. years ago, i belonged to an organization in a school where we get contacted by caterers who needed people to serve at private parties. i don't get called anymore even though i'm a certified 'smart server' because i had the reputation for 'counting' people's drinks. i don't serve beyond two mugs of beer or three glasses of wine to any one. and in one of the last parties i served, i actually called the police because a guest didn't want to hand over his keys and he was already loaded when he arrived at that party. until d&d happens so close to them, people don't get it.

@summerfield Goodness I admire you for taking a stance at a function like that. If losing a loved one doesn't work they could always try telling a 4 yr old why his mummy isn't coming home, that would sober them up sharply!
September 21st, 2012
@claireuk - oh my goodness! that is the hardest thing to do, explaining to a little person why mum's not going to be there. it happens so often here. now another enemy is the cellphone. my heart goes out to that four-year old.

@summerfield Thanks Vikki, he is 29 now, his sister 27 and they are lovely 'kids' The same things happened to my husbands cousin too, she was killed by a druck driver left 3 under 10; Honestly the 1980's were not a good year for my family!

@alia_801 - thank you, alia.

@catsmeowb - thank you, camille. we have a lawyer at the office who was a senator and every year he brought us a handful of little canadian pins similar to this and the one on the yellow ribbon. there was one year when there was a lot and nobody was taking them so i got two handfuls and i gave them away during my commute home and people were quite happy.

@netkonnexion - damon, thank you.

@sarasdadandmom - thank you, terry. i wish that the penalties would be more stiff and appropriate, some of them just end up with a slap on the wrist.
