it was a pretty day today and i thought i'd get to the beaches and see what's around there. the horizon was pretty dark, the waves were fast and slapping the shore hard and loud, a precursor to a storm.
the mix of sand and snow provided for an easier walk along the shore. i saw these ridges that had formed from the last week's low temperatures. i started to shoot whilst walking towards it. didn't notice that my feet had ventured too near the water, in fact felt a slight hard surface. was about to kneel down when right foot slipped, i looked and i was on the icy edge that was about two feet from the water. i heard a slight crack and i still had my girl scout's instinct, made my left foot hop on to the sand/snow and fell. used my right arm with the right hand holding the dSLR to balance my fall, my worry was actually that i might drop the darn camera on to the water, will i rescue it or let it go and cry? in mid fall, my finger pressed the shutter and this is what i got, or where i might have fallen: http://one-photograph-a-day.blogspot.ca/2013/01/day-1064-fate-was-kind.html
had i fallen on to the water, no one would've seen me, or if they did, they'd be too far away to do anything, i'd have been carried by the current which was quite strong today; never seen it that strong before. if i had dropped my camera, would i have gone for it? i don't know, but what about the photos?
so i thought i better not tempt faith, after one or two shots, i left. went to the dollar store, got a small bag of whistles, so i can have one on my person whenever i go trekking alone. yeah, genius, like i'd have the presence of mind to use it.
Wow what really sounds scary . Thank goodness no broken bones or camera are in this story. I always kick myself when I leave my phone in the car and I'm out by myself.
Oh Summerfield ... what a close call. You are one lucky girl, my friend. Please do take care!! Always look down and behind you. Coming from someone who knows .. I didn't look and ended up in ER about this time last year. Whew .. close call. Happy that you (and camera) are o.k. Oh, and yes, I love the photo. :)
Girl!! you need to be careful! Thank God your ok and that camera is high and dry! And like the true photographer you are you still got the shot off! wonderful!...on a side note...where would you keep the whistles?
Well, summerfield, that depends. Stepping on the poop wouldln't have been as bad as "sliding on it!" Take care and stay safe. We are so much alike that it scares me. lol :)
That could have been a nasty accident, glad you got through it unscathed! Wonderful capture, I like the lip that has formed! I would put the whistle in my pocket.
Firstly stunning photo! Does your toast fall jam side up? :0)
Secondly if there is no one ther who will hear you whistle?
I nearly dropped the dslr in the snow yesterday, I grabbed himself so hard; he is under strict instruction to save the camera..............
Glad your safe, don't get so engrossed next time, 'casue we know there will be a next time.................................cx
EEEK!! Well, I am very glad you did not fall in and managed to save yourself! And to have the foresight to press the shutter release at the same time ;-) Now keep safe from now on please!!! Oh, and I may need to pinch your idea about buying a whistle, more because of some of the dodgy areas I end up venturing into...
What a fright - I quite often see stories about people just walking by the sea and falling into the water. YOU are more important than the camera, if it happens!!!!
i've only been on 365 for a short time, but it amazes me what can happen trying to get a good shot!! this one is impressive, but please don't risk life and limb!!
@salza - i used to always have a whistle on me, even when i sleep. when the grandsons used to come here, they played with all the whistles they can find and now i can't find them. thank you, sally.
@karenann - thank you, KA. heck, i was thinking stepping on a dog poop would have been a better alternative.
@roth - i did see a dog poop, someone was bad, didn't pick up after their doggie. the whistles? i was hoping you could tell me! :-) thank you, sue.
