first time i came up close and personal with this flower. i was at high park to see what's up with the nesting pair of swans i found there two weeks ago.
i came upon a group of three young people, speaking polish i think, one female and two males. the girl was a little bit hyper and she was holding a stalk of lily-of-the-valley flower. we both saw the trilliums at the same time, below some large century-old trees. she ran for it and i was afraid she was going to pluck some of the flowers. i told told the two men that "i hope she's not going to take any of the flowers or i will report them. it's illegal when they're on government lands." one of them yelled something to her in polish and she replied in a rather dismissive tone. and she kept touching the flowers so i went over and told her not to pull any as it is illegal. she went back and they were whispering. i decided to set up my tripod and the camera with the zoom lens and waited just in case one of them would have the nerve. good thing i had all the time; heck i just left a big package of pork chops on my kitchen counter, that surely can wait.
the trio was still whispering to each other, slowly walked away, and one of them sneakily went back so i yelled, showing him that i'm holding my cell and i'm ready to call for one of the park rangers. they must've thought i was nuts.
the trillium is "protected on property owned by conservation authorities and provincial parks" which high park is. the trillium is ontario's provincial flower.
this post is for the "wallis crew" @northy@shutterbug@slang@russianblue and for the rest of our ontario and canada contingent, wherever they may be.
many thanks for your kind views and comments; i do appreciate and enjoy them.
Very nice lighting. We do the same protection here for the showy lady slipper. There are always some who will either take a flower or dig it up to plant at home. So much nicer to admire or photograph and leave alone. So what of the swans?
@jannkc - thank you, jann. the swans are still nesting. it's amazing how they both man the nest, taking turns and all. i think there's something wrong with my canon's 55-250 lens, all the shots are blurry. i've not used it much but every time i use it, the images are soft and when i'm zooming in, i get blurry pics. i don't have that problem with the bigger kit lens of the nikon. i'd have wanted to post a photo of the swan in the nest.
@bkbinthecity - haha! i would not have hesitated to call security had they picked the flowers. but for all you know when i left they could've come back and steal. who knows. thank you, brian.
They are beautiful! We have several plants like that protected in PA too- Jack in the Pulpit and May Apples I know of for certain. Probably the Trillium too. Beautiful shot.
