forever bicycles by summerfield

forever bicycles

this is what this art installation is called. it is by the chinese artist Ai Weiwei from beijing. no seats, no handlebars, no pedals, no tires. just the skeletons of bicycles stitched together with steel rods and pipes.

i asked one man, who was pushing his bicycle through the square, what he thought of it. "rubbish!" he said. "there's no rhyme or reason." i said, "they're bicycles." "no, they're not, you can't ride on any of them. it's a waste." then he pointed to his bicycle. "this," he said, "is a bicycle."

i don't get it either.

Perhaps they will forever be bicycles because no one can ride them and wear them out. I don't know, but I think it's a cool shot and I fav'd it!

Interesting. Art ? Not art ? Rubbish ?

I'm sure the artist has good reasons for doing what he did but I do wonder if in this case less wouldn't have been more!

Well, it's ART! You cannot eat a painting of a bowl of fruit, either, but that certainly does not diminish its artistic value! If it was all about function, then it would be a truly mundane world!

It's good to see it at this angle so we can see how it's fixed together, Maybe he'll do one with pedals, tires, seats and handlebars next!!

Love your pov and being able to see the sky through the installation adds a lot to the image. Great capture.

love your pov on this... my husband's comment was something along the lines of: kinda cool, but not convinced it actually "says" anything

@northy - funny but that was my first reaction, too! actually, i was disappointed. only because of your shot that i got curious. even the chair installation i couldn't get it. i'm probably just too old and set in what i know is art. but at least it's not a compilation of 'used toilet seats'. but i would not have gone to photograph it. thank you.
