pillars of justice by summerfield

pillars of justice

the "pillars of justice" is a 20-foot wide steel sculpture by Edwina Sandys and is located in front of the toronto courthouse. it consists of a stylized courthouse façade the pediment of which is supported by two rows of human-shaped columns. the columns represent the 12-person jury, the part of the legal system in which the public most often participates. however, there are only eleven columns, the artist's intent was for a person to stand in that vacant space and imagine being that important twelfth juror. you can see that vacant spot third from the right.

i have never been called for jury duty in all of my 25-some years here. my sister had been called twice but each time she was rejected because she's always falling asleep.

i like the juxtaposition of the cold steel metal and the softness of the red leaves of the maple tree draped above the columns.

i was surprised and a tad bit horrified that my overlayed selfie from the 29th of october made a brief appearance on the popular page today. well, a good 8 hours in total, it was. but i wish to thank you for your kind visits and comments and your generous favs; know that they are always appreciated.
Wonderful find and capture. Love those Pillars of Justice, as well as your composition including the red leaves branches. FAV.

The red leaves do complement this picture of stolidness (if there is such a word!) No monkey business in this court!

The framing by the red leaves really enhances the shot. Our judicial system doesn't use juries, the judge's decision is final!

I like this, and the contrast in texture. Cold steel vs. nature's soft color and texture. Very nice.

Those colors really give this statue some life. Great framing.

It's a great sculpture, I like the way the gap was left for people to stand there. Those female ones have very slim waists!! The grey is brought to life by the wonderful autumn colours.

Like all the others who have noticed them, I think the leaves enhance the shot too. I also like the artist's concept. Both the sculpture and photo are well done!

Awesome sculpture and great shot. I was called for jury duty once way back when I was only 18 years old. I did not picked as I am sure they thought I was to young

I love the artists concept and your capture of it. You know I have lived here since 1989 when pelican bay prison opened. Since half our county is inmates in a giant prison, we have a lot of jury duty. I get called a couple times each year and have been selected three times but once the case ended right after jury selection when he changed his plea.
