get pushed #75 - red balloon

this is the east side of my apartment building, the view from my front window. on sunday morning as the ice storm was in progress, the largest branch of the old tree at the back of the property fell. it broke a portion of the fence and parts of it rested on top of three smart cars (the other side of the fence is a city-run parking lot). the cars weren't damaged but the light standard and the signs on the nearby post were broken. this is just a small portion of the branches that fell.

the ice on the lawn is now topped by the snow that fell on Christmas day and is beginning to harden into ice with this low temps we're having. then i realized that the old planter on the side of the window looked like a fancy bowl and with the snow piled on top of the now dead "dead nettle", it looked like an ice cream sundae and i had this bright idea to put the red balloon on top. so i put it on top of the iced planter. ready, aim, shoot! no, as i pressed the shutter, the wind blew and the darn balloon fell onto the snowy ground and flitted away. but i didn't want to chase it because i didn't want to have footsteps on the snowed over lawn.

went back inside the apartment and tried to find one of the boys' toys, a long thingie that can pick up things. can you imagine seeing an old woman with that thingie and camera in hand and trying to fish a red balloon? but i got the balloon without disturbing the show. as i was about to put it on top of the planter, wind blew again and red balloon landed on the branches. i could reach it with the long thingie toy but i couldn't quite grab the lip of the balloon and it just kept moving until i couldn't grab the bloody thing anymore. how frustrating! but i think the neighbours and passersby had some genuine amusement watching me. i know, because when i left for work they were smiling at me funny.

penny price @pennyp is my partner for the get pushed challenge this week and her challenge is "to take a photo with a red balloon as part of the picture. You can choose how to do it - full colour, selective colour or maybe a composite."
@pennyp - another red balloon for you, penny.

Fab, fab and very fab, again. Better story, better picture, I really love this one. especially clever to have the person walking past the gap at the end of the untrodden snow. I big round of applause, I love it. Fav.

I think I like this better than what you intended. It reminds me of the film "The Red Balloon" and I really like the figure walking by in the background. This picture tells a story- even though it's not the one you originally intended.
