rain-soaked iris by summerfield

rain-soaked iris

we had a big storm yesterday in the early evening. i was on the train going home and our train stopped in the middle of the bridge that overlooked the don river and the parkway. the parkway shone in the dark with the cars' taillights looking like gemstones, like diamonds and rubies on a bracelet. the southern sky was still bright but the dark clouds hung over the city ominously. when i lifted my head from the book i was reading, i saw a plane passed through the bright part of the sky.

the train didn't move for a long time and i admired the view before me. i struggled between pulling my camera out to take a photo or just let it be for once. unlike a beautiful sunrise or sunset that had the possibility of repeating itself if one was patient enough to wait, storms this beautiful didn't.

then it dawned on me as my hand crept inside my purse, my finger tracing the shape of the shutter and the on/off lever, that although the view was well worth taking a picture and could've been my photo of the day, that i would enjoy the view as it happened. i could take a shot, but i didn't have to. if the photo didn't turn out well, i'd be upset with myself and for not making the most of the opportunity, so why not just sit there and enjoy the view? and that's what i did exactly. then the train started to move and in a moment we were underground again.

i waited a full half hour at the station before i braved the rain to walk home. after supper i went for a walk and took this picture of a rain-soaked iris.

thank you for your kind views and comments; know that they are genuinely appreciated.
This is a lovely shot Vikki. Could for you to take the time to just enjoy the view. I know that must have been very hard

Such a pretty flower, I always like blue and purple flowers best!
Sometimes to just see a scene and absorb it is the best way to remember it. Trying to get the best capture you can often means you miss the instant magic of the moment!

Quite right, sometimes the desire to capture gets in front of the need to just enjoy. We have still enjoyed "sharing the moment" through your story, as you painted the picture with words for us, thank you. The iris is beautiful.

Very pretty! I think you did the right thing. Sometimes it's better to just experience the moment and photograph another time.

I can totally relate! Sometimes, we just need to BE in the moment....not try to capture it. I worry, in a moment like this that if I don't shoot the photo and post it, then I will forget it. Then I tell myself I can write it up in the write up, even if my photo is of something else that day. And that is just what you did! I am glad you enjoyed that wonderful view without your camera in your face!
