kingston, ontario is a city about 265 kilometres east of toronto. it had been and has remained an important military installation for the country.
kingston is home to many of the country's artists who work in visual arts, media arts, literature, and a growing number who work in other time-based disciplines such as performance art. it is also known as "limestone city" for its many heritage buildings/structures that were made of the limestone that was available locally.
kingston's most famous structure, however, is the now closed(?) maximum security penitentiary, famous because of the media coverage of high profile convicted criminals such as russel williams and paul bernardo.
this is the front entrance of the old penitentiary, taken from the steps of the canada penitentiary museum located just across the street.
kingston was the first stop of our two-week photographic road trip in september.
thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are greatly appreciated.
I'm thinking that the artists live in the city, not the penitentiary! (had to read twice since the concept of a military penitentiary filled with artists appealed to me)
I cannot believe that with all of those artists in the area this grand old building remains closed rather than housing artist studios and exhibit spaces! Oh, well... wonderful capture, though....and, who do I talk to about that renovation project?!
