my mother taught me and my brother how to read and write at an early age. she sometimes thought it was a mistake because ever since i learned how to read, i learned how to travel and dreamed of going to faraway lands when i grew up.
books can take you anywhere, and from reading i learned about all the places i wanted to see. from reading i learned languages other than english before i actually went to school to study them. french and german were of absolute use when i lived in europe for two years. three and half years in the sultanate of oman taught me the basic arabic, learning how to count and deal with money were of course one big advantage.
sometimes i have the urge to just ride the bus to anywhere, stay the night, then return. next stop when i retire, perhaps go on a cross country train ride - i heard a lot of beautiful places in canada. but of course, the wandering lust in me will also seek a home - that happens to all wanderers at the end of the day. the lobsters in nova scotia just might make me stay put.
I love the idea of doing a train ride across a country. We contemplated going from New York to San Francisco a few years back when we visited my brother, but it would have taken too long!
Great shot and words Vicky! I love the atlas and maps, and as a student would now and then skip a lesson and hop on the train to a place I hadn't been before.
