for the high key black and white challenge, this was taken on the 12th of june but i'm posting it on this date slot.
for the 23rd week of my 52 portraits of me project, the prompt is favourite. i have so many favourites - food, music, movie, friends, did i say food already? but i choose to let you know again that hats are my favourite accessory. when i lived in the sultanate of oman so many years ago, when the world was young and the moon was new, i had fulfilled my dream of wearing hats. i especially love the summery wide-brimmed hats and the first time i bought one, i had used it to play croquet at the intercontinental hotel during one of their customer appreciation events. i wore with it an off-the-shoulder white dress which i thought would scandalize the arab guests but it turned out it didn't as i got a lot of praise from them and they assured my boss and his wife that i was perfectly okay in my outfit. it was also the first time i learned how to play croquet. and then of course, when we were invited to the afternoon reception for the prince and princess of wales, hats were de rigueur for the ladies.
when i came to canada i had more excuse to buy hats. i had a pillbox hat, a half-dozen berets in different colours, a cloche, a panama, a gatsby hat and i've been given so many baseball caps that i had to send most of them to the home country because i realized i only have one head. over time, i had to give them away. six years ago, i started buying them again for my self-portraits and i think i had the best collection then that i actually started to wear them. my only reservation is when it's so windy i couldn't really enjoy wearing them. then when my apartment got flooded, even though the insurance had had them cleaned, i had to give them away to salvation army. now i just have a cloche, a beach hat and a wide-brimmed for winter.
