this past weekend, i sort of turned my mind into my imminent retirement, i.e., i have to deal with the papers i must submit to the government to receive the meagre funds i will have to contend with when i no longer have the salary of a senior legal assistant. rather a gloomy endeavour, ain't it?
in my search for old papers needed, i came across these fake grapes that i brought with me from oman. the set consists of a ceramic holder that is in the shape of a grape leaf, and the cluster of grapes made of white jade. when the british secretary whose position i took over left in haste, she left quite a few nice things in the flat. i kind of liked this set and i kept it. over the years the flimsy wires that held the grapes had rusted and most of the grapes had fallen off the stem. when i saw this, i thought i might need it as photo props.
coincidentally, i haven't bought grapes in years, as i have never been lucky in buying them. i always get the sour ones and i hate sour grapes (both the literal ones and the figurative ones). but last saturday before i actually found this set, i bought a pound of seedless green grapes. well, they're still pretty sour to my taste but i thought a piece would be nice to go with the set. i would need to post this in colour though.
ah, the lighting. normally, i would have the dining room overhead light but i turned it off for this shot, so the light here is coming from the kitchen with the door half closed. i had thought it would be too dark and the green grape might get lost in the black background, but i see that it didn't.
always good to read the back story - especially when written by your good hand. I think I'm leaning to this one - but you have to give it time to let it grow on you .
They both work well, but I saw the colored one before the black and white and really liked the pop of green. Funny how we find such mementos when we're looking for something entirely different! Good shot!
Nice low key photo. The lighter colored grapes look to be made from alabaster. How imminent is your retirement? I retired in 2012, well officially 1/1/2013. I highly recommend it!
