yes, that was a long, long time ago, when the world was young and the moon was new.
seeing this photo, it occurred to me that i've been selfie-ing even before i came to canada, that before i came here, i have already some mastering of the self-portrait genre. that is because even in the old days, because i'm the one with the camera, i'm the one taking photos and so it was not then possible to have me in the photo at the same time -- be it during excursions, parties, etc. so even my instamatics, first thing i needed to learn was how to use the self-timer, else i would use up a whole roll of film sans me in it. tripods were for professionals during those times and i had to make do with cabinets, fences or other flat surfaces where the camera had no chance of falling.
this was taken in front of my very first apartment in downtown toronto. first real snow blizzard i've experienced and i was having fun. it wasn't fun though to run on the thick snow to pose! i remember there were a couple of people in the upper floors watching me do this. 'twas a good thing it was still early in the morning so not a lot of people were about yet.
the canon prompt is "winter". and where do i get a current photo of winter, unless i go to the antartica? so a little creative thinking was employed and le voilà!
A great read, and I love the way you presented this older self-portrait. Your description of using the self timer, is what I am stuck with now. On the whole, I am far too worried about being conspicuous to use a tripod - even if I did recognise the right time to take it with me.
