today, i give you a pair of paintings. if these are familiar to you then you should know that these are painted from two photos of a very talented photographer and naturist. you might remember @jerome someone who has travelled almost everywhere and his beautiful and spectacular photographs are proof of that fact.
i was particularly drawn to these two photos that he posted in november 2018. these are parts of the fort of nizwa, located in nizwa, the sultanate of oman. seeing these photos when he posted them brought back a lot of beautiful memories when i used to live there from 1985 to 1988. i have no good photos of my travels within oman but i do remember most of the places i had been to. the fort of nizwa holds special memories for me. i know, i could've just asked jerome for copies of the photos but i had fun recreating them by painting.
the first time i visited nizwa, we were caught in a sandstorm that left us in my car, a mazda miata courtesy of the office, half buried in sand on the side of the road between date groves.
Oh my goodness Vikki, they look like photos!! I particularly like the depth of the one on the right, you are a wonder with a brush my friend. NOW!! No more moaning you cannot paint, these are extraordinarily beautifully painted. Bravo, Bellisimo, Fabuloso!!
the washed out stains were difficult to capture. i made so many mistakes with the minaret and the dome of the mosque that i re-did it 3 times. in the end i had to convince myself enough is enough and that i'm not really perfect (only nearly perfect! :-D).
Well done. I had never seen Jerome's photos - what a wealth I had missed. I think that you painted good likenesses of the two photos, but have your own touch on both of them.
These are gems to look at. Your contouring on the sandstone buildings is so good! They really look 3D. Wonderful job on all the subtle shade changes too. You really get the feeling of the aridness of that region.
