..... not many chicks though! I have a little collection of various varieties of Hens&Chicks. They survive but certainly don't thrive in our shady conditions. The cob web ones in the lower right are my favourite.
If you're interested, you can take a peek at some Hosta I grew from seed ... check out the upper left corner. They're 2.5 years old. It'll take another couple of years to know for sure their true size. The struggling plant in the lower left corner is some ginger. It doesn't appreciate being in Kala's path.
Edit: I should have added, the white stuff in the soil is egg shell. I just emptied the compost container and this garden benefited.
Cool shot. I actually had some of these. They didn't thrive in a pot; and died out when I put them in the flower bed. They were suppose to be one of the plants the original colonist brought to the new world with them.
@mwarren365 very interesting info, Mike. Thanks for dropping by. I had some at our old house and they baked in the sun all day and thrived! They were growing in the cracks of a stone retaining wall and by the time we moved, there were hundreds, if not thousands of them.
@hillcrest thanks for dropping by and commenting Cheryl. I really appreciate your ongoing support and friendship. Different varieties are different sizes. This pic is a bit deceiving ... the dish only has about a 9 inch opening. I had some of a giant variety but they died out. As for yours, I wouldn't water them much. They'll grow in cracks of rocks so don't like to be constantly damp. This shallow clay dish doesn't have a drainage hole so I keep it tipped up to drain.
I love to see all your beautiful plants. I used to spend hours and hours on my flower beds, but the past few years the focus has turned to vegetables, and even those get neglected when I get too busy with work. Seeing your photos has reminded me how much I miss them.
@lauriehiggins And I'd like to try my hand at some veggies, now that I have a bit of time, but we don't get enough sunlight to grow them. You're fortunate to have an interesting job that you enjoy. There'll be time for gardening in the years to come ... ;-)
ps. made some red pepper jelly today .... probably pic tomorrow.
We had the same problem with our yard, but between Mother Nature and some storms we've lost alot of trees in the 20 years we've lived here. We have a medium size garden in the back yard and a nice sized plot at our town's community garden. Can't wait to see your red pepper jelly! I was just looking at your recipe again last night! Our peppers are slow, slow, slow to ripen this year.
