It had to be a garden shot for the beginning of spring. These hens and chicks survived the winter and will probably fill this container by the end of summer. There's 4 different varieties. The surrounding trees block too much of the sun for them to really thrive like they should.
Happy Spring, Anne! I've always heard of 'hens and chickens' but never knew what they looked like. The current owners of the house we will be moving to are big gardeners. Can't wait to move and see what will be blooming.
I love that kind of plants but I've never had much luck with them. I probably overdo the watering or something like that. I love the container. This is a great first day of Spring shot.
This is a great shot and great niche for the hens n chicks! I should try this. My little hens n chicks are on stone in flower garden but get overshadowed too much. Like the DOF and colors too!
@kbuehl thanks! mine tend to get lost in the garden too. at our previous house they flourished in a rock wall/full sun location. if you try them in a container, be sure the container has great drainage. This one is permanently tilted to ensure they don't get too wet.
this shot is so nicely composed Anne!
i didn't realize there were different kinds of hen and chicks. I have some. they make me think of my grandmother:)
I haven't seen this plant in so long, I had forgotten all about them. This is beautiful, and I love the way you have them "falling out of that fabulous pot".
@ladydi53@lesleyallen thanks lesley and diana! the rosettes [hens] give off little shoots [chicks] that grow into more hens. there aren't any chicks in this shot because it's early spring.
They look like they are doing quite well really! Even in low sunlight. This brought back a sweet memory with my granny. She grew these in an old bird bath in her back yard. I remember standing there with her as she explained how the "chicks and hens" thing worked. She has not been gone "that long"...only 6 years ago at the age of 103.5! Anyway, I enjoyed this photo!
@summerfield thanks vikki! the parent plants are the hens and the baby shoots are the chicks. the chicks grow up to be hens and produce more chicks --- at least they do if they have nice sunny conditions! ;-)
