I had forgotten the name of this little one until Trina, Jann and Shirley came along [@5unflow3r @jannkc@sabanford]. It's an American Goldfinch. Males and females are very similar in fall and winter so I'm not sure which this is. I think it's a male because the wings are more black than brown/black [McGill Bird Observatory info]. Males in spring and summer are much brighter.
I have those in my yard too. I have never captured one on film, though. He looks like he bit off more than he can chew! Lovely, soft colors in this, real life happening.
