Before this latest visit I went searching in the loft and found Niki's Sindy stuff. Some of you with daughters of a similar age (Niki is 39) will remember it. By the time Martha came along a few years later Sindy had been well and truly replaced by Barbie. I think Niki enjoyed playing with it as much as Charlotte and Freya did. Apparently there are things I haven't found yet.
Such memories!! I just finished reading the book about the woman who created the Barbie. Interesting story. Our daughter, now 47, had numerous Barbies and her friends.... and clothes (made by my aunt) and accessories.
@aglennc That must be an interesting story. What's her name? There's something different and special about those early Sindy and Barbie dolls, clothes, furniture and accessories. You've possibly never heard of Sindy, Anita. It was the British answer to Barbie but eventually Barbie took over.
The name of the book -- "Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World's Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her". The author: Robin Gerber. I got my copy from Amazon for my Kindle. The woman who created Barbie was Ruth Handler. Her Barbie and Ken dolls were named after her two children. (Her children weren't pleased about it either!)
Oh how I wish we'd kept all the Sindy stuff we had. Our daughter didn't like Barbi but she had every bit of Sindy furniture you could think of ( including the town house which took the whole of Christmas Day to put together) wonderful memories. Thank you!
@chimfa Niki only had the Sindy stuff and I actually MADE a house. It was like a set of shelves with sides and a back which I wallpapered but it did the job nicely. Sadly that didn't stand the test of time. It was made of chipboard and got damp.
