Tidying Up for the Winter

It's not very nice out in the garden now. It's cold and the ground is very wet and everything's dying back. Chris is helping the process along. It's good to leave some growth to give cover for wildlife but we have a bit of a problem with unwanted wildlife (rats!) so we don't want them to have cover. The other side of the fence is very overgrown with brambles, great for the birds but that's where the rats are coming from. They're attracted by the food at the bottom of the bird feeders but we don't want to stop feeding the birds. It's a dilemma.
I've got the same kneeling thingy 😊 you need a good carpet snake to move in like I have

Have you tried gluing light plastic plates to the bottom of the feeders? Some feeders have built in plates.

A big dilemma, our next door neighbour said she had seen a rat cross into ours too.....we have lots of dead brambles & are waiting for garden landscapers to come & shift them.. Haven’t seen any rats eating our bird food yet though...
Gardens are looking their worst just now,

I like this shot, it is certainly hard work but I see that the helper is smiling

We once had that problem because our neighbour had so much rubbish over the fence. Hopefully they won’t appear again as I love to feed the birds

Hard work kneeling down to tidy up. When I do that, and that is frequently, when I stand up I have to take time to straighten. I agree about your dilemma, it's difficult to decide which line to take.

We're having the same problem with our bird feeder. So far I've only seen mice and the resident butcherbird is helping to clean them up.
