St Swithun's Church and the Sebastopol Cannon, Retford
The Sebastopol Cannon in Cannon Square, Retford, was one of many weapons captured from the Russian army by the British soldiers at the Battle of Sebastopol in 1885.
A number of local men fought in the Crimean War and it was thought to be appropriate to install one of the cannons in Retford as a permanent memorial. The 1000lb gun was brought to the town by rail from London in April 1885.
