Purple Hairstreak

This is not an impressive photo, although it might have been if the butterfly had opened it's wings and let me see the rich purple sheen on the upperside, but I've never seen one of these before. I don't think they're particularly uncommon but they prefer to keep to the treetops in mature woodland so they're quite difficult to see. Quite why this one was on a waterlily leaf is a mystery.
I have never seen one of these.

Lucky you. It' s a much better photo than my own one and only. Now I have confirmed they are near the new Meadow we support I intend spending 5 to 7pm watching the Oaks next summer. A Purple Hairstreak is worth a stiff neck!
