Interestingly, absinthe was banned in the UK and most of Europe because of it's high alcohol levels, it's hallucinogenic properties and because it was alleged to be addictive. It was only when the EUs legislation on food and drink was overhauled in the 1990's that it became legal to sell it in the UK.
It is also known as "la fée verte" because those who drank it seemed to be away with the fairies most of the time.
However, if it was good enough for regular imbibers like Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Charles Baudelaire, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Marcel Proust, Aleister Crowley, Erik Satie, Edgar Allan Poe and Lord Byron, It'll do nicely for me. :)
