This is folklore. In medieval times, "Schutterijen" acted like the police. They protected the cities and country sides. In the 19th century, they became more societies, to which not only armed people became connected. Marketenters were women that were allowed to sell food, drinks and other stuff to these armed forces. Currently, schutterijen ar folklore, the meet several times a year in competition. They parade and are rated on the best "performance".
