This Gulf Fritillary (thanks @cjwhite) would not light more that 1 or 2 seconds! He was all over the place. I got a couple of decent shots, but not the great detail that I'm looking for - still learning so I know I'll get there!
Thanks so much for all of your comments and for taking a look at my shots. I welcome any suggestions as I'm trying to learn.
Well, I think you did quite well with this one considering you were shooting a moving target! The orange of his wings stands out beautifully against the leaves.
I like how when you really look at it, you cannot tell what in the world his wings are doing as far as positioning...are the tilted upward, down? Who knows? It is cool. I forgot to tell you...do you shoot these butterflies with your camera on "burst" or continuous shutter/firing? I do. I put it on that, and a shutter speed to avoid blur like 1/500 or higher...then I start with normal dof like 8.0 or close, and then I've been using auto ISO so it picks the ISO...otherwise, as you shoot into shade and sun, you cannot remember to change it and it is too fast to change it....I also tended to shoot pics way to light/exposed if not using Auto ISO in this situation. Anyway, shooting on burst/continuous results in a LOT of photos to go through, but that is how I usually get one like that Skipper SLURPing like a straw or some close ups.... I think you are doing great. Aren't those Gulf Fritillaries pretty?! I love their orange eyes!
Don't know how you did this shot, but whatever you attempted to do, it sure shows some excellent results, it is pretty tough to get a butterfly to pose for a shot.......good job!
@espyetta I was not on those settings. I was on completely on manual. I had the ISO too high on the first several shots and they were all to light. I'll try it on auto ISO next time. Thanks for the input!
Nice shot sure is a beauty. Learn you adjustment buttons on your camera without having to look at them. Trust your light meter then you can make those adjustments fast without taking your eye off your subject. Burst mode is a must with a fast shutter speed.
Gorgeous shot, Tara!!! I love Gulf Fritillaries! They are beautiful open and closed. I saw four or five of them today, but they were flying full speed. I never had a chance for a shot. You did an awesome job! :0)
@cjwhite Thanks so much Carolyn. It means a lot coming from you :). They are beautiful butterflies and quick! The orange is so bright. I don't think I even had to edit this one - the color is so brilliant.
