Since I've been drooling over the Kelly Moore bags but could not justify the cost, I decided to make my own (or more specifically, convert a purse into a camera bag)! The internet is so awesome for stuff like this so I googled diy camera purse and found the designs that I liked and went to work. The hardest part is find just the right purse that you're going to use to hold your equipment. I found one at Ross for about $40 and then I used the search results to sew up the protective foam inserts. It took some work, but I'm pretty pleased with the results. There are a couple of things that I'd do differently, but that's another project! For now, this is it! I can't wait for my new camera strap to arrive now . . .
I'm also adding this to the manual focus challenge since I took several shots focusing on different aspects of the bag before settling on this one.
oh, the beauty of knowing how to work the sewing machine. i can't for the life of me. i've spent over 200 dollars now just for the right bag. the ones that fit and i like broke so easily and i just might have to order a KM - i like that chapel backpack purse! this hobby is getting to be soooo expensive! i like the colour of your purse. good for you for diy-ing it.
@summerfield It's frustrating isn't it? I can sew very basic stuff, nothing fancy - straight lines, patches onto a Boy Scout uniform, etc . . . We'll see how long this one holds up. It appears to be a nice purse, but you never know. I may end up with a KM myself before it's all said and done ; )) Thanks for commenting Vikki!
@russianblue Definitely! I purchased 1 inch dense foam that I covered in a pretty fabric that encases my camera. It's a little bulky, but I know that my camera is protected. I made a divider that goes down the middle to separate my lenses.
I'm so impressed by your new bag, Tara. You did a beautiful job inside and I know that couldn't have been easy. I, too, think that the KM bags are very expensive. I just have a standard Tamrac (black) bag from the camera shop. It's not stylish but it does the job. I have one large one and one small (just for the camera and the "lens of the day." Yes, I put most of my money into the lens!! Your project will catch on ...I think it's genius. And congrats on shooting in manual. :)
@karenann Thanks Karenann. I have a standard black bag as well that was perfect for my old Rebel camera. It held the camera and my 300 lens no problem. I could also fit my little point and shoot in it too. After I received my 60D, everyone won't fit anymore. That's when I started looking for a new bag. I think that I'll keep the standard black one like you for the lens of the day. Thanks for commenting!
