I am still trying to get a good shot of this little guy, but they are hard to get at. This is a shot at a 630 equivalent, then has around a 300% crop. I don't think that I can justify a 200-500 lens, but for the time or two I want it that over 1000 seems like a must (500x1.4x1.5=1050).
Belted Kingfishers are not easy for me but yours is beautiful! Wow! On a trip to Wilapaugh reserve in Washington, we drove by 3 sitting together in the rain, on a post in the water but there was no where safe to pull over :-( This is really quite beautiful.
@elatedpixie Thanks I use post processing magic, a long shutter, and a tripod to get this one. They are so small and flighty that a stupid zoom is almost a requirement.
I have been trying for years to get a decent shot of one for multiple years now and failing handily. This kind of counts, but I think it is a web-only photo, and I would like to print a shot at a reasonable size.
Good to have a grat shot that stands up to the crop. I have toyed with getting one of those great big birding lens then I held one of a friend and decided I didn't want to carry it around let alone try to hold it steady. I am not a birder so I am happy for a good crop. And this is excellent.
@joansmor I feel your pain, this was shot with a great compromise system- a Nikon 300pf with a 1.4 tc on a crop body. It gives you the equivilant of 630mm f5.6 and a total weight of 4lbs or less and a lens length of about 8.5 inches. The images are generally sharp when handheld above 1/300 of a second.
You really can't touch that zoom/price point/ compactness on any full frame currently.
A wonderful shot. I like it so much. I'm not a fan of ever larger lenses. You do not want to take a picture for an encyclopedia. Free your creativity and show it in an interesting environment. It was easy to take pictures of birds, it would not be pleasant. Successful hunting!
@teriyakih I have been thinking of a new lens so copying the infor for later exploration. When I have taken care of a couple of other things more pressing. Thanks.
If anyone wants help getting rid of noise, I make a quick how to with a method that that I have been using to good effect on this and other photos. I don't know if others use it, I figured it out by playing around with layers.
