I nearly stood on this Blue Tongue Lizard this afternoon as I was coming out the back door after getting some drinks. It seemed as if he wanted to join us for afternoon tea so he ended up having a feed of banana, apple and slow roasted lamb.
They are a member of the Skink family. Anyone hazard a guess as to why it is called a Blue Tongue?
So lucky he escaped your heavy foot! I won't hazard a guess to your question - I'll leave it to the non-Aussies :) Fav for great angle of your shot of a beautiful creature!
Fav'ing this because you know how I feel about lizards! And to catch him with his tongue poking out deserves a double-fav. Were you down on the ground when you took this pic? Would he allow you to touch him?
Beautiful specimen and what a great capture. He seems very tame, we have a blue tongue under our deck but it is very shy and scoots when it sees us. Happy New Year Terry.
@_catherine_ Ahh!!! The slow roasted lamb: A leg of lamb; scored and rubbed with my secret jerky mix of 47 herbs and spices, sealed in an oven bag; and cooked at about 110deg for abt 5 hours. The meat just falls off the bone. Can you taste it? :-)
@lyndemc I was "flat out like a lizard drinking" as the saying goes. The camera was as close to the ground as I could get it. Yes the quiet ones will allow you to pick them up but I like to leave them alone in case they object and get scared off. If they latch onto your finger, they can really hang on.
Fabulous shot. The blue tongue lizard who has been visiting us for the last 15 years and hibernates under our log shed hasn't turned up this year so I guess she has gone to that great bushland in the sky.
@terryliv That's what I pictured, you, down on the ground, lizard-level, for the shot. Interesting that they will allow human contact. That's cool. I ask about touching the wildlife and you go and post a picture of you petting a Kooka. Sweet.
