Spur Winged Plovers by terryliv

Spur Winged Plovers

These two were taking refuge in the shade under a tree at golf this morning and did not want their photos taken. After following them around for a few minutes, this is the closest I got to a front on shot. The plover is a very interesting bird. It nests on the ground - just about anywhere, the middle of the car park, the middle of the fairway you name it. The hen lays 3-4 eggs. Both parents protect the nest and the chicks very aggressively swooping and bombing perceived threats amid a screeching alarm call. They have a spur on the elbow joint of their wings which they use to give intruders a whack. I'll try for a better shot some other time.
We get lots of them here and they always seem to be close to a main road or a roundabout. No wonder they always look nervous ha ha.

Are they native to Australia?

At least plovers give a warning before attack, magpies are far more stealthy, nice capture Poppo :-)

Neat photo, I'm not familiar with this bird. It is nice to see the detail.

@annepann yes Anne. I looked it up and it appears they occur in Australia and a number of SE Asian countries. Thanks for viewing
