While they are quite a common bird, for some reason or other, we rarely see Pee Wees at our place.
This fellow was out at golf this morning and posed quite happily for photos. They are a really nice bird to have around with a very high pitched piercing call of pee wee, pee wee.
Had to go to my trusty Bird Bible as I've never heard of Pee Wee (other than a dog we once had!) I call this bird a mud lark. However, the trusty BB actually calls them Magpie-Lark, then in brackets, Peewee). Today's new bit of knowledge for me. By the way, great shot :)
@gilbertwood We have always called them Pee Wees but I was aware that they had other names like Magpie Lark.
When I was posting, I checked Wikipedia and they said that it was called Pee Wee in Qld and NSW, mudlark in Victoria and Western Australia, the Murray magpie in South Australia. I thought that was interesting that the names were split along state lines. Also, it is not related in any way to either a magpie or a lark. I'll stick with Pee Wee.
I love PeeWees, we have a couple with a nest somewhere amongst our trees and I am blowed if I can find their little mud nest. They are quite aggressive with the Maggies and Kurrawongs.:)
@terryliv Thanks for the info Terry. Pity the poor bird who flies over the borders, he'll get very confused as to what his name is!! I'll stick to mudlark being a Vic :)
Nice capture Terry. There were lots of them nesting & with young in Roma but i was unable to get a good clear shot of them as they were nesting in those bottle trees,
