The bases of these Antarctic beech trees up at Springbrook national park in the Gold Coast hinterland are a mass of gnarly buttress roots.

While these trees normally regenerate from seeds, this population continues to survive and regenerate by sending out new stems from the trees base and through suckering. That is a sucker on the extreme left of the shot
